NEWPORT — George Jones, a longtime co-owner of O’Brien’s Pub known for his generosity and sense of humor, died early Saturday morning at his home in the Fifth Ward after an illness. He was 74.

“He was overly generous,” said his longtime friend, Mayor Harry Winthrop. “Whether it was all kinds of youth sports, the Hibernians bagpipe band or the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, he supported all these people and events because it was the right thing to do. He never wanted recognition.”
